The delicate flower buds have attracted gourmets. Deer are feasting on our spring flowers 🙁

Actually, we are always delighted when we see that the garden show has been chosen as a habitat by local wildlife. However, these new inhabitants bring worry lines to our foreheads. A roebuck and his ladies are feasting on the tender buds of the spring bloomers and have already caused devastating damage to the flower beds. They have eaten almost all of the tulips planted last year and are now feasting on the replanted buds of pansies and the like. The tried and tested method of spreading sheep’s wool in the beds in previous years to deter the occasional deer has failed this year, and even the products that are supposed to spoil the deer’s appetite leave them unimpressed. We are at a loss, our gardeners are sad and there is nothing left for us to do but to tell you the sad news that the park will not shine in its usual splendor this year. We ask for your understanding!

16th Rhineland-Palatinate Pumpkin Weighing Championships at the Kaiserslautern Garden Show

After Matthias Würsching’s winning pumpkin last year beat the pumpkin that had been unbeaten since 2011, which weighed 717.5 kg at the time, by 728.4 kg, things got exciting again on September 22 at the 16th Rhineland-Palatinate Pumpkin Weighing Championships at the Kaiserslautern Garden Show!

In fact, the record was broken again. The third heaviest pumpkin from Medhi Daho, who had traveled all the way from Le Mans, France, broke last year’s record with a weight of 753.8 kg. Elmar Hubertus’ pumpkin from Marpingen took second place with a weight of 796.6 kg. Matthias Würsching beat his own record from last year with a sensational weight of 834.9 kg.

In addition to the giant pumpkins, field pumpkins were also weighed, with Owen Olsen’s pumpkin taking first place with 43.2 kg and Owen Olsen’s longourd (snake pumpkin) also taking first place with a length of 2.54 meters. In addition to pumpkins, other vegetables also took part in the Rhineland-Palatinate Weighing Championships. Owen Olsen’s watermelon won first prize with 19.60 kg and in the tomato category Björn Dietrich came out on top with 677.0 grams.

The audience voted Matthias Würsching’s pumpkin the most beautiful.

First visitors of the 2024 season

Six-year-old Max and his mother Diana Grün arrived early at the main entrance to the garden show on Saturday and waited excitedly to be let in. In fact, the sun even came out and made the freshly planted spring beds shine in bright colors. At 9 a.m. the gates opened and Walfried Weber, President of Lebenshilfe Westpfalz e.V., welcomed Max and his mother as the first visitors of the 2024 season. While Mrs. Grün was happy about a bouquet of flowers, Max was thrilled with his LEGO® gift. A whole host of other visitors had already arrived to pay the garden show their first visit of the season. As every year, the children were drawn first to the dinosaurs and playgrounds while the parents enjoyed the splendor of the flower beds.

First work on the sand sculptures

The sand sculpture exhibition “Jungle Fever” is being created from 160 tons of sand in the entrance area of the garden show under the Berliner Brücke. While our hard-working employees are compacting the sand into a basic shape – 6 of these shapes will be created in total – the artists Jeroen van de Vlag and Anique Kuizenga are already starting to design the first two sculptures. At the weekend, Jeroen and Anique will be joined by Ludo Roders and Fergus Mulvany. We are already very excited about the complete work of art!
